Topgolf — a Dallas-based company that bills itself as a “premier golf entertainment complex” and your “favorite local hangout” — announced Monday morning its plans to open a 65,000-square-foot center in Auburn Hills.
The City of Detroit will shutter all three of its municipal golf courses — Chandler Park, Rackham and Rouge Park — later this month after the city council voted not to approve the contract in a deadlocked vote Tuesday.
The courses will shut down on March 23. A city official said the courses will be closed for the rest of this year. It’s unclear if they’ll reopen after that.
Detroit’s Chief Procurement Officer Boysie Jackson said in a statement followed a 6-month procurement process led by his office that led to a selection of the vendor to operate and maintain the courses.
“Today, Detroit City Council voted not to approve the contract with a 4-4 vote,” Jackson said. “Without a contract in place, The City of Detroit Municipal Golf courses will close upon the conclusion of the existing contract, which expires on March 22.”
